Pregnancy Safe Skincare & Treatments

Expecting a baby or still breastfeeding? We can still help you achieve healthy, radiant skin!

All those hormonal changes involved with growing a baby can wreak havoc with your skin, so we are happy to let you know you can start (or continue) your treatment journey safely at LaserSkin Specialist.

While there are some treatments and ingredients that need to be avoided while you are pregnant and/or breastfeeding, many of our facials and products are perfectly safe for mum-to-be’s!

SKINCARE INGREDIENTS

When it comes to skincare, there are some ingredients that should be avoided, as these can be absorbed into the skin and interfere with foetal development. In the morning, active ingredients such as vitamins B and C are perfectly safe. These ingredients can be particularly beneficial for women experiencing hormonal pigmentation, as they help to brighten the complexion and improve the appearance of uneven skin tone.

Hydrating ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid and vitamin E can be great for any mum’s experiencing dehydration, sensitivity or inflammation.

Medik8 White Balance Brightening Serum

SPF is also essential during pregnancy as your skin can become more sensitive. Daily application will help protect against UV damage, premature aging and pigmentation.

Environ RAD15

When it comes to washing away the day, most gentle cleansers are safe for use. For sensitive skin, switching to an oil-based cleanser can help to soothe irritation. This can be followed with a cream or gel cleanser for skin that needs a little bit more.

Environ Mild Cleansing Lotion / Environ Pre Cleanse Oil

Your evening routine is where you need to take extra caution. There have been studies that have shown vitamin A to be a high-risk ingredient for pregnant women. While this has been challenged in recent years, we would recommend choosing an alternative during this time.

Bakuchiol is ideal for those who are looking for a vitamin A substitute as it’s proven to have very similar anti-ageing properties to retinol, but without retinol-like side effects. It’s a great option for many people who are unable to use vitamin A, such as those with sensitive skin, as well as women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Bakuchiol peptides

We are a big fan of acids for their gentle removal of dead skin cells, however, these do need to be used carefully during pregnancy. While AHAs (such as lactic and glycolic) are generally considered safe to use in low doses,  BHAs (such as salicylic) should be avoided. If in doubt, opt for a gentle scrub, muslin cloth, or regular pregnancy-safe clinical treatments to keep your complexion feeling fresh.

In summary:

✓ Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Hyaluronic Acid, Bakuchiol Peptides, some AHAs

✗ Vitamin A, BHAs (particularly salicylic acid)

CLINICAL TREATMENTS

If you thought you may have to give up your clinical treatments, think again! There are many facials that are perfectly pregnancy safe.

For those who are suffering from hormonal breakouts or congestion, microdermabrasion can be a great way to refine your complexion. This treatment uses crystals that are gently sprayed onto the skin, manually loosening dead skin cells. The intensity can be adjusted to your needs and can be combined with hydrating masks and LED for a nourishing facial.

If your skin is sensitive or reactive, LED will be your savior! This device uses various wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin, helping to increase skin healing, reduce inflammation and ensure your barrier is strong. LED is a beautifully calming treatment, allowing expecting and new mum’s some much-needed respite.

Other facial treatments and lactic peels can be customised to suit your needs. These include cleansing, exfoliating and nourishing ingredients, paired with massage to leave you feeling relaxed and your skin glowing! It’s best to discuss your needs with your therapist to ensure the treatment is suitable.

During this time, it is important you avoid any laser, IPL, skin needling and injectables. While some vitamin infusions and peels are pregnancy safe, always let your therapist know that you are pregnant and/or breastfeeding when booking to ensure you and bub stay safe and healthy!

In summary:

✓ Microdermabrasion, LED, customised facials, some peels

✗ Laser, IPL, Skin Needling, some peels, some Vitamin Infusions, Injectables
