Maintaining Gorgeous Summer Skin

We all love summer. It’s a chance to rock that new bikini, hit up the beach and get back to that gorgeous, summer glow. Unfortunately, it can also have some not-so-wonderful effects to your skin, most notably sun damage and dehydration. To help you get the most out of this fabulous season while still promoting better skin health, check out our 7 top tips for getting (and maintaining) that gorgeous summer skin.

1. Eat well

A gorgeous outside starts on the inside! Like every other part of the body, your skin needs adequate nourishment to thrive so it’s important to eat a nutritious and well-rounded diet. To promote that gorgeous summertime complexion, try including some of our favourite foods for healthy skin:

  • Blueberries, oranges + broccoli – for vitamin C
  • Brazil nuts, tomatoes + eggs – for selenium
  • Almonds, hazelnuts + pine nuts – for vitamin E
  • Avocados, oily fish + seeds – for healthy fat
  • Oily fish, chia seeds + rapeseed oil – for omega-3
  • Lean red meat, wholegrains + seeds – for zinc

2. Stay hydrated

Keeping on top of hydration is one of the easiest ways to protect your skin during summer. This is because water helps to transport essential nutrients to the surface, provide moisturisation and to tackle a range of dry skin conditions. To keep your skin happy and hydrated this summer, aim to sip around 8 glasses of water throughout the day and a bit more if you’re spending prolonged time in the sun.

3. Protect yourself from the sun

We all know how important it is to lather up when we go to the beach, but many forget that sun damage can occur even when we aren’t spending loads of time in the sun. To protect yourself against dry skin and premature ageing, get yourself a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and remember to reapply it regularly. For this, we love Medik8’s Physical Sunscreen SPF 30 because it provides fantastic protection against UVA and UVB exposure to tackle signs of photoaging without the use of nanoparticles. It’s also ultra-sheer for that matte complexion and super-fast absorbing with a light and fresh fragrance.

4. Keep out of the air con

Everybody loves the air con during summer, but did you know it’s one of the quickest ways to deplete moisture from your skin? Air conditioners essentially suck moisture from the air so if you’re spending hours on end chilling indoors, your skin will be the one that suffers. Having said that, we can’t always escape the air con (and nor do we really want to) so just remember to keep your hydration levels up and slap on some moisturiser whenever you get the chance.

5. Moisturise more

Spending long periods in the sun and even longer periods in air con can equal some seriously thirsty skin. For this reason, we recommend getting yourself a really good moisturiser to help tackle the effects of dryness and dehydration. Check out our favourite all-round moisturiser, Vita-Antioxidant AVST 1, formulated with a low concentration of vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate), vitamin C and a range of antioxidants. This wonder cream should be used twice daily and works to normalise and enhance natural moisture levels. It also works to minimise signs of ageing and sun damage while supporting a healthy, dewy complexion.

6. Use vitamins

High potency vitamin serums are another sure-fire way to bring a little suppleness back to your skin. One of the best moisture revivers on the market has got to be Medik8’s Hydr8 B5 Serum, which contains a powerful combination of B5 and ultra-moisturising Hyaluronic Acid to promote softer, more luminous skin. It also has fantastic water-retention properties to help quench that summer skin thirst.

Vitamin A is another powerful skin protector that fights UV damage and can help to slow the development of fine lines and wrinkles. To get your daily dose of vitamin A, try Environ’s Concentrated Retinol Serum 1, designed to normalise skin damage and promote a healthier, more youthful complexion. It also works to balance skin texture and encourages a firmer, plumper appearance to thwart signs of sun damage and premature ageing.

7. Get a facial treatment

Facial treatments like microdermabrasion can work wonders for sun damage, uneven skin tone, general signs of ageing and roughness or dehydration – especially in the summertime when these issues generally peak. By exfoliating the dead skin cells at the surface of your skin, increasing oxygen stimulation and applying clinical rehydration products to the freshly revealed skin cells, your skin will be left feeling brighter, smoother and completely rejuvenated.
