How Do I Start A Skincare Regime?

If you’ve ever browsed skincare in-store or online, you’ve probably discovered a thousand different “must-have” products. For anyone who is new to the world of cosmeceuticals- this is pretty overwhelming! While there are numerous products and ingredients to target just about every concern, there are a few basics that are the perfect starting point for an effective regime.

1. Cleanser

A cleanser is a staple for everyone. It will help to remove dirt, oil, makeup and SPF from the day, leaving your skin fresh and ready for the rest of your regime.

While a single cleanse is perfect in the morning, we always recommend going in with a double cleanse in the evening. The first will help to remove impurities from the surface of the skin, while the second cleanse will penetrate deeply into the pores to properly clean the skin.

Cleansers do come in a range of formulations – including oils, gels, foams, and creams. When choosing your cleanser, it’s important you find something that leaves your skin feeling clean but not dry, tight or stripped of moisture. Here are some of our picks:

Normal skin: Environ Low Foam Cleansing Gel

Sensitive skin: Environ Mild Cleansing Lotion

Dry skin: Environ Hydra-Intense Cleansing Lotion

Oily skin: Environ Sebu-Wash Gel Cleanser

2. Moisturiser

Your next essential is moisturiser. Hydration is key to maintaining your skin’s barrier, reducing premature ageing and locking in any active ingredients applied prior.

Moisturisers come in endless formulations and consistencies, so it’s important to find one that works for you. Some options include ingredients like SPF for daytime use or Vitamin A for evening use. However, when starting out, a simple hydrating moisturiser that can be used morning and evening can help to simplify your regime.

We love:

Normal skin: Environ Vita Antioxidant AVST Moisturiser

Sensitive skin: Environ A,C & E Body Oil

Dry skin: Environ Youth Essentia Defence Creme Plus

Oily skin: Environ Sebu-A,C & E Oil

3. SPF

Many people are surprised to learn that SPF is the #1 anti-ageing product. Did you know almost 80% of photo-ageing is caused by UV exposure? Applying a broad-spectrum SPF every morning will help protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays.

UVA rays are associated with ageing. These rays affect surface skin cells and also down into the dermis contributing to fine lines and wrinkles, pigmentation and age spots, degeneration of collagen and elastin and indirect DNA damage- which lead to premature ageing! UVA rays have the ability to penetrate through glass, meaning it is also causing damage if you are in the car or sitting by a window.

UVB rays are associated with the burning of the skin. These rays affect surface skin cells, causing burning and blistering of the skin and directly damage DNA. Both of these rays can contribute to skin cancer, and they do not discriminate on skin type and heritage: this is something everyone can get from the sun!

This means in order to achieve optimal skin health and avoid cellular skin damage, you need to apply a 30-50+ SPF every single day, even if you are wearing makeup that states it contains sunscreen and even if you are inside.

2. Environ RAD SPF 15

4. Vitamin C

Once you’ve got your cleanser, moisturiser and SPF sorted, you can begin introducing active ingredients into your regime. And Vitamin C is the perfect option for your morning routine!

Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that helps to fight free radical damage and premature ageing. This helps to increase your skin’s natural sun defense (but does not negate the need for SPF!). It also has to brighten properties, making it a great option for anyone concerned with pigmentation or uneven skin tone. Vitamin C also assists healthy collagen production to firm the skin and improve overall texture. It really is an ingredient that ticks all the boxes!

While we always recommend choosing cosmeceutical-grade skincare from a trusted clinician, this is extra important when it comes to vitamin C. This ingredient isn’t the most stable, meaning it can oxidize over time and reduce its efficacy. Choosing a high-quality option may seem a little more pricey in the beginning, but will outlast a cheaper alternative and deliver superior results.

Here are some of our favourites:

1. Medik8 C Tetra+ Intense

2. Medik8 White Balance Brightening Serum

5. Vitamin A

Your #1 nighttime active ingredient is Vitamin A (retinol or retinal). Vitamin A is able to normalize skin function, meaning it can influence cells to behave in a younger, healthier way. It also help to promote the production of collagen and elastin, leaving your skin youthful and radiant.

Other benefits include speeding up healing, preventing breakouts, regulating oil production, reducing pigmentation and supporting the skin’s immune system.

It’s important to note that Vitamin A is a potent active ingredient and should be introduced to your regime gradually, beginning with a mild dose. We usually recommend starting with an entry-level product twice a week for 2 weeks, every second night for a further 2 weeks, then nightly. Once you have used your entire product, you can then increase the strength if needed.

Our top 3 products for vitamin A newbies are:

1. Environ Skin EssentiA Vita-Antioxiant AVST Moisturiser 1

2. Medik8 Crystal Retinal 6

3. Medik8 Retinol 6TR
