Everything You Need to Know About Exfoliating

Exfoliation is a key part of every skincare routine. It helps to leave the skin bright and smooth, as well as ensure it is functioning optimally. Today we will look at why exfoliation is so important, the best ways to exfoliate and some of our favourite products and treatments to leave your skin looking radiant!

What is exfoliation and what does it do?

Exfoliation is the process of removing dead skin cells from the outer layer of your skin.

This process is one of the most important steps in skincare, as it gets rid of dead, dry, and flaky skin that accumulates on the face, helping to reveal a smoother, younger-looking complexion.

It also stimulates circulation and encourages collagen production. As we age, the rate of cellular turnover decreases, leading to a dull, lackluster complexion. Exfoliation helps to ensure this process remains regular for healthy, radiant skin.

Exfoliation also removed dead skin cells and excess oil that can clog pores and lead to congestion and breakouts. It will also mean your products are able to absorb more easily and provide optimal results. The benefits really are endless!

While exfoliation is important for all skin types, it is often best to take a ‘less is more’ approach. Over-exfoliation can lead to irritation, redness, rightness as well as impaired barrier function. As a rule, a dedicated scrub or mask used 2-3 times per week is enough for most people.  However, some cleansers and moisturisers can be suitable for daily use.

If you suspect you are over-exfoliating, switch to hydrating and soothing products for a few days and reduce your current frequency. You can also get in touch with our team and we can recommend a suitable regime for your needs.

There are a number of methods for exfoliating the skin. Generally, they fall into two main categories: manual and chemical.

Manual exfoliation uses methods such as exfoliating scrubs, muslin cloths, and microdermabrasion to gently buff away the dead skin cells. Often manual exfoliation is better suited to more tolerant skin types, as the friction may cause irritation to sensitive skins.

Chemical exfoliation uses acids to break down the bonds between the skin cells and encourage them to shed naturally. Glycolic, lactic, and salicylic products are available in various strengths to suit your needs. Products containing acids are particularly beneficial for oily and acne-prone skins.

Enzyme exfoliation digests the dead skin cells attached to the upper layer of the skin. This is generally the most gentle method of exfoliation and is least likely to lead to over-exfoliation. If you find scrubs or AHA/BHA products too harsh, an enzyme exfoliant could be worth trying.

A combination of manual, chemical, and enzymatic exfoliation can be used, depending on the skin’s needs. If you are searching for the right exfoliant for your skin needs, speak to our team!

Here are some of our favouite exfoliators. They can be gradually introduced into your regime to promote skin radiance.

Medik8 Surface Radiance Cleanse

Surface Radiance Cleanse works effectively to manage the main concerns of oily skin while providing anti-ageing benefits, with both AHA and BHA acids. Surface Radiance Cleanse contains L-Mandelic Acid, which has been shown to offer similar exfoliation properties to glycolic acid, but without the same level of stinging or irritation which can ultimately lead to superior results and a more comfortable experience. Best suited for normal – combination/oily skin types.

Environ Alpha Hydroxy Night Cream

Alpha Hydroxy Night Cream is formulated with medium concentrations of Glycolic Acid and Lactic Acid. By supporting the skin’s natural pH and assisting with the natural exfoliation (desquamation) process of the skin, these Alpha Hydroxy Acids are known to help improve textural problems associated with dehydration (roughness of the skin’s surface), leaving the skin feeling softer and smoother. Suitable for most skin types that have been adequately prepped.

Environ Revival Masque

Specifically formulated with a revolutionary combination of three powerful ingredients (Lactic Acid, Asiatic Acid, and D1-Mandelic Acid) this “facelift in a jar” may assist in enhancing the skin’s overall look and feel as well as resilience. This dynamic masque leaves the skin feeling smoother and looking younger with a healthy radiance. Suitable for ageing skin types.

Medik8 Pore Refining Scrub

A dual-action exfoliator, Pore Refining Scrub harnesses the power of both exfoliating acids and physical exfoliators for a deeply cleansed complexion. Mandelic acid is an AHA with BHA properties, working on the surface of the skin to slough off dead skin cells. As it is also slightly oil-soluble, it is able to enter the oil within pores to break down blockages which can lead to blemishes. Best suited for normal – combination/oily skin types.

Professional exfoliation is a key feature in most of our signature treatments. Here are some of our most popular treatments.

Our microdermabrasion treatments are non-invasive services using corundum crystals that are gently blasted onto the skin’s surface.

This abrades back the layers of the dead cells on the epidermis resulting in smoother, more youthful, brighter, and healthier-looking you. Intensity levels can be regulated to suit all skin types and conditions, including:

  • Sun-damaged skin
  • Acne scarred skin
  • Congested, dimpled, and uneven skin
  • Rough and dehydrated skin

The treatment is pain-free and has no downtime!

Chemical peels are recommended for people suffering from acne, rough skins, fine wrinkles with peeling, superficial pigmentation and rosacea.

At Laserskin Specialist, we offer a range of revitalising and anti-ageing and chemical peels to treat all conditions, including customised treatments for sensitive skins. These include:

  • LAC PAM GEL 10% – Lactic acid 10%
  • LACM #1 – ph .09
  • LACM #2 – ph 0.6

Our team will be able to assess your skin and customise the perfect chemical peel to leave your skin refreshed and radiant.

For those looking for a more gentle method of exfoliation, try one of our signature facials. Each treatment will include a customized exfoliation and/or peel to remove dead skin cells before following with masks, infusions, and other add-ons to leave your skin looking and feeling its best!

Our luxurious Anti-Ageing Facial includes both exfoliation and a custom peel. This is one of our most popular treatments for clients of all ages!
